5 Video Games With Confusing Plots
Another hobby of mine is playing video games. I have many memories of playing games with my brother and cousins. There are many games with great storylines and gameplay, but others have confusing plots that still have me boggled.
The Kingdom Hearts Series – I love this series and have played the games many times, but the plot is a mess. The game is full of charm due to the Disney characters like Mickey, Ariel, and Winnie the Pooh. However, the charm can wear off when you get farther into the game. For starters, the timeline is confusing. There are many games, and if you don't play them all, you miss plot points. The next thing I feel was confusing was the Nobodies and the Heartless. Roxas is Sora’s Nobody, and Roxas has a connection to Ventus. Roxas and Sora look nothing alike, but Ventus and Roxas look alike. After the first game, it becomes so confusing—even Sora doesn’t understand what’s happening. And the third game was a massive disappointment to me.
EarthBound – EarthBound is a fun RPG set in Eagleland, a parody of America. It has witty dialogue, memorable characters, a unique combat style, and so much more. It is one of my favorite RPGs. However, it does have some confusing elements—such as how Pokey, Ness’s annoying neighbor, becomes the leader of Fourside and joins Giygas in taking over the world. It is also confusing how Ness and his friends can't fight Giygas directly; instead, they must pray to ask for help to defeat him. It is a totally unexpected element to see in an RPG. Even though there are some confusing elements, overall it's an amazing game.
Indigo Prophecy – The game starts off as a regular murder mystery. The main character, Lucas Kane, commits a murder while he is possessed. It is the player's job to uncover the truth. The game then turns to sci-fi and fantasy. There are secret cults, ancient Mayan prophecies, and an AI called the Purple Clan. The game becomes more confusing because you switch between three characters' perspectives: Lucas, Carla, and Tyler. Playing as different characters can be fun and a cool way to tell a story; however, in this game, the different characters' storylines do not mingle well together. The game starts off intriguing and promising but falters due to the sudden genre change.
Life Is Strange – While I did praise this game series in a previous post for its immersive world, the storylines in these games can be confusing. This is especially true because the player gets to choose the ending of the previous games, and those choices carry over to the new game. In this game, Max has a new ability to travel between timelines. She uses this ability to help her solve who murdered her friend Safi. It becomes confusing as she travels between the timelines. It becomes even more confusing when it is revealed that Safi has powers that allow her to transform into people she met before. She created the two timelines herself to get Max to use her powers to stop the storm. This storyline is crazy, to say the least.
Death Stranding – While I haven’t played this game myself, I have heard that it is very confusing. I’ve seen the trailer, and I did not understand anything that was happening. The story blends science fiction, the afterlife, and spirituality. You play as a delivery man, Sam Bridges, who delivers supplies to isolated towns and survivalists in an apocalyptic world. There is a lot of confusing terminology thrown at the player that often changes meaning. The reviews for this game have been mixed. Some players say it’s confusing and makes little to no sense, while others claim it’s profound and a story about isolation.
Have you played any of these games? What are some other games with confusing plots?
